Mount Kilimanjaro trekking via the Machame Route is one of the most popular, scenic, and rewarding ways to reach the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Commonly referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is celebrated for its striking variety of landscapes, excellent acclimatization profile, and adventurous trekking experience. It is particularly favored by climbers who want a beautiful yet physically engaging route with high summit success.
Beginning on Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes, the Machame Route ascends through five remarkable ecological zones—lush rainforest, giant heather moorland, alpine desert, arctic summit terrain, and glacier-covered crater rim. Each day reveals dramatic changes in scenery, from moss-covered jungle to the famous Lava Tower, the thrilling Barranco Wall, and the exposed summit ridge leading to Uhuru Peak.
This carefully designed 7-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization advantage compared to the shorter 6-day version, allowing climbers more time to adapt to altitude and significantly increasing summit success rates. The route follows the classic “climb high, sleep low” strategy, particularly through Lava Tower and Barranco Valley, making it one of Kilimanjaro’s most balanced routes for both adventure and safety.
With professional mountain guides, experienced porters, excellent camping logistics, and full safety support, Sereti Wilderness Safaris proudly offers the Machame Route as the ideal combination of challenge, beauty, and achievement on the journey to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.

— Accommodation: Budget, Midrange or Luxury Hotel in MoshiAltitude: 1,800m to 3,000m | Distance: 11 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
After breakfast, depart Moshi and drive to Machame Gate where all registration formalities with Kilimanjaro National Park are completed. Soon after, the trek begins through dense tropical rainforest on Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes.
This forest section is rich with ancient trees, giant ferns, hanging mosses, colorful birdlife, and occasional monkey sightings. The trail can be humid and muddy, but it is incredibly beautiful and full of life. The steady climb through the lush jungle provides a strong but manageable first day on the mountain. By late afternoon, the forest begins to thin as you reach Machame Camp.
— Accommodation: Camping (Machame Camp)Altitude: 3,000m to 3,840m | Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Leaving the rainforest behind, today’s route enters the giant heather and moorland zone. The trail climbs a steep rocky ridge with increasingly open views over the Shira Plateau and the plains below. As vegetation becomes lower and the air cooler, climbers are rewarded with the first dramatic views of Kibo Peak’s summit cone.
By afternoon, arrive at Shira Camp situated on the broad Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus on Earth. This exposed and scenic campsite provides sweeping sunset views and a strong sense of being fully on the mountain.
— Accommodation: Camping (Shira Camp)Altitude: 3,840m to 4,630m down to 3,900m | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the expedition. The trail climbs steadily through barren alpine desert toward the striking volcanic rock formation known as Lava Tower. This high point allows for serious altitude adaptation.
After spending time at Lava Tower, descend gradually into the beautiful Barranco Valley. This “climb high, sleep low” method greatly improves the body’s acclimatization process. Along the descent, enjoy magnificent views of the Western Breach and giant senecio plants before reaching Barranco Camp.
— Accommodation: Camping (Barranco Camp)Altitude: 3,900m to 3,995m | Distance: 6 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
After breakfast, begin the exciting climb up the famous Barranco Wall. Though steep in appearance, this is a non-technical scramble and one of the most enjoyable parts of the route. Once above the wall, the trail undulates through ridges and small valleys with breathtaking mountain scenery at every turn.
Arrive at Karanga Camp by early afternoon. This shorter day is intentionally designed to support recovery, hydration, and continued acclimatization before heading to high camp.
— Accommodation: Camping (Karanga Camp)Altitude: 3,995m to 4,673m | Distance: 4 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Today’s trek is relatively short but vital as you move into the final summit zone. The trail climbs steadily over exposed alpine desert with almost no vegetation, and the cold mountain winds become more noticeable. Arrive by midday at Barafu Camp, allowing sufficient time to rest and organize gear.
After an early hot dinner, climbers are encouraged to sleep for several hours before the midnight wake-up for the summit push.
— Accommodation: Camping (Barafu Camp)Altitude: 4,673m to 5,895m down to 3,100m | Distance: 17 km | Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Shortly after midnight, begin the final ascent under the stars. This section is steep and mentally demanding as you climb toward Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. As dawn breaks, the glaciers begin glowing in the sunrise.
After celebrations, begin descending back to Barafu Camp for brunch, then continue downward through alpine desert and moorland to Mweka Camp for your final overnight on the mountain.
— Accommodation: Camping (Mweka Camp)Altitude: 3,100m to 1,640m | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Descend through Kilimanjaro’s lush southern rainforest where giant ferns and towering trees provide a refreshing close to the expedition. At Mweka Gate, complete park sign-out procedures and receive your summit certificate.
The Sereti Wilderness Safaris team will then transfer you back to Moshi for a hot shower, celebratory dinner, and a comfortable overnight stay.
— Accommodation: Hotel in MoshiDepending on your departure schedule, our representative will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey. You leave Tanzania with unforgettable summit memories and the pride of standing atop the Roof of Africa.
