Four-Day Mount Meru trekking via the Momella Route is the mountain’s most dramatic, wildlife-rich, and physically demanding ascent path, designed for trekkers who crave a serious vertical challenge and a true volcanic wilderness atmosphere. Beginning on the eastern side of Mount Meru at Momella Gate, this route wastes little time in gaining altitude, climbing sharply through pristine montane forests and spectacular savannah glades before gripping the narrow, thrilling crater rim toward the summit.
Often regarded as the ultimate hidden gem of Tanzania, Mount Meru is favored by experienced hikers and adventurous climbers who wish to avoid busy trails and immerse themselves in the volcano’s raw, untouched beauty. Its direct nature means trekkers ascend rapidly through changing ecological zones—from jungle home to colobus monkeys and giant heather moorlands to exposed alpine desert and dramatic volcanic rock—creating a powerful, intense mountain experience.
Although Meru is considered a major physical test due to its steep profile and quick elevation gain, this carefully designed 4-day version includes a vital recovery afternoon at Saddle Hut to maximize altitude adaptation and enhance summit success. The route also rewards climbers with some of East Africa’s most breathtaking scenery, including the towering internal Ash Cone, the sheer cliffs of the collapsed caldera, and an unforgettable sunrise looking across the clouds at neighboring Mount Kilimanjaro from Socialist Peak.
With strong mountain leadership, an armed national park ranger, permanent hut logistics, and constant safety supervision, Sereti Wilderness Safaris presents the Momella Route as the ultimate volcanic expedition for fit trekkers seeking abundant wildlife, physical endurance, and the deep satisfaction of conquering Tanzania’s second-highest mountain by its boldest trail.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly received by the professional team from Sereti Wilderness Safaris and transferred to your selected hotel in Arusha city. Nestled beneath the towering slopes of Mount Meru, Arusha offers the ideal setting to relax and prepare mentally for the demanding adventure ahead.
In the evening, your lead mountain guide will provide a detailed route briefing, high-altitude safety orientation, and complete gear inspection. Since the steep profile of Mount Meru requires an intense vertical effort right from the start, this preparation meeting is especially important. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the hotel.
