Highest summit success

The Grand Path

Embark on the longest and newest route available. Circle the mountain’s northern face for 360-degree views and the highest summit success rate of any itinerary.

Mount Kilimanjaro trekking via the Marangu Route is one of the most classic and comfortable ways to conquer Africa’s highest mountain. Commonly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the oldest and most established trail on Kilimanjaro, famous for being the only route that offers overnight stays in mountain huts instead of tents. This makes it especially attractive for climbers seeking a more sheltered and convenient trekking experience, particularly during colder or rainy seasons.

Approaching the mountain from the southeastern side, the Marangu Route follows a scenic and well-maintained trail through Kilimanjaro’s striking ecological zones—from dense rainforest and heath moorland to alpine desert and the icy summit zone. Along the journey, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks, unique high-altitude flora, and an ever-changing landscape that reflects the mountain’s dramatic natural beauty.

Although Marangu ascends and descends along the same path, making it less varied than some of Kilimanjaro’s circular routes, it remains one of the most preferred choices because of its gradual trail profile and comfortable hut accommodation. The additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut significantly improves altitude adaptation and greatly increases summit success.

With experienced mountain guides, dedicated porters, nourishing meals, and full logistical support from Sereti Wilderness Safaris, this climb offers a memorable combination of adventure, safety, and achievement as you stand on the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa.

Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Altitude: 2,360m to 2,820m | Distance: 6 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

DAY 2

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Altitude: 2,820m to 3,610m | Distance: 8 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

— Accommodation: Camping (Shira 1)
DAY 3

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Altitude: 3,610m to 3,850m | Distance: 7 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

— Accommodation: Camping (Shira 2)
DAY 4

Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut

Altitude: 3,850m to 4,200m | Distance: 9 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

DAY 5

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Altitude: 4,200m to 4,020m | Distance: 12 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

DAY 6

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

Altitude: 4,020m to 3,850m | Distance: 8 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

— Accommodation: Camping (Third Cave)
DAY 7

Third Cave Camp to School Hut

Altitude: 3,850m to 4,800m | Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Leave the northern circuit and move toward the summit base at School Hut. The landscape is now barren alpine desert with volcanic scree. After arrival, the afternoon is reserved for complete rest and a detailed briefing for the crater and summit attempt.

— Accommodation: Camping (School Hut)
DAY 8

School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Crater Camp

Altitude: 4,800m to 5,895m to 5,790m | Distance: 6 km | Time: 7–9 hours

Begin the final ascent at midnight to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) as sunrise illuminates the glaciers. Unlike most climbers, you will continue into the summit crater to sleep at Crater Camp, allowing rare exploration of the Rebmann Glacier and the volcanic Ash Pit.

— Accommodation: Crater Camp (Extreme Altitude)
DAY 9

Crater Camp to Mweka Camp

Altitude: 5,790m to 3,100m | Distance: 12 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Altitude: 3,100m to 1,640m | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
