Summit via Gilman’s

The Remote Path

Diverse ecological zones from savanna woodland to arctic summit, amazing route with extra acclimatization day

Mount Kilimanjaro trekking via the Rongai Route offers one of the most peaceful, remote, and naturally beautiful journeys to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Approaching Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Kenyan border, Rongai is the only route that begins in this dry and less-visited wilderness, making it an excellent option for climbers who prefer quieter trails, wider open landscapes, and a more exclusive mountain experience.

Unlike the busier southern routes, Rongai provides a gradual and steady ascent through remote moorlands, volcanic ridges, alpine desert, and the dramatic Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The route’s gentle incline makes it physically manageable, while the additional acclimatization day greatly improves the body’s ability to adapt to altitude leading to a higher summit success rate and a more enjoyable trekking rhythm.

One of the most remarkable features of the Rongai Route is the extraordinary change in scenery. Climbers begin in dry montane forest with possible wildlife sightings, continue across expansive moorlands with endless views into Kenya, then move into the stark alpine desert before making the final summit ascent to Uhuru Peak via Gilman’s Point. The descent follows the greener Marangu Route, giving trekkers a complete traverse of Mount Kilimanjaro and the chance to experience two different sides of the mountain.

Supported by highly trained mountain guides, experienced porters, nourishing meals, and reliable safety systems, Sereti Wilderness Safaris presents the Rongai Route as an outstanding choice for trekkers seeking solitude, scenic grandeur, and a rewarding climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)  the legendary Roof of Africa.

Day by Day Itinerary

ARRIVAL DAY

Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by the Sereti Wilderness Safaris team and transferred to your comfortable hotel in Moshi town. As the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi provides a relaxed atmosphere to begin your adventure while the majestic silhouette of the mountain looms in the distance.

In the evening, meet your chief mountain guide for a detailed route briefing, altitude safety orientation, and personal gear inspection. This session is essential to ensure all trekking equipment is suitable and that every climber is fully prepared for the days ahead. Enjoy a hearty dinner and overnight stay as anticipation builds for the climb.

— Accommodation: Budget, Midrange or Luxury Hotel in Moshi
DAY 1

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Altitude: 1,950m to 2,650m | Distance: 8 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

After breakfast, depart Moshi and enjoy a scenic drive around Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. This area is much drier than the southern side of the mountain and often offers clear views across the open plains of Amboseli in Kenya.

Following park registration, the trek begins on a gentle trail through sparse montane forest and cultivated woodland. Because this side of the mountain is remote and less frequented, there is occasionally the chance to see colobus monkeys, antelope, or other small wildlife. The route climbs gradually through peaceful surroundings before reaching Simba Camp, set on the edge of the moorland zone with expansive views behind.

The first evening on the mountain is calm and refreshing, giving climbers time to settle into the trekking rhythm while enjoying dinner under the open African sky.

— Accommodation: Camping (Simba Camp)
DAY 2

Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Altitude: 2,650m to 3,450m | Distance: 6 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Today’s trek continues through the open heath and moorland zone, where the vegetation changes dramatically into low shrubs, giant heathers, and scattered volcanic outcrops. The trail remains gradual and comfortable, allowing for a slow but effective altitude gain.

As you climb higher, Mawenzi Peak begins to dominate the eastern skyline with its rugged and jagged volcanic towers, while the plains of Kenya stretch endlessly behind you. The route offers a sense of isolation and silence that is difficult to find on the busier Kilimanjaro paths.

Arrive at Second Cave Camp in the afternoon with ample time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the increasingly dramatic high-altitude scenery. Optional short acclimatization walks may be done nearby before dinner.

— Accommodation: Camping (Second Cave Camp)
DAY 3

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Altitude: 3,450m to 3,600m | Distance: 9 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

After breakfast, leave the main northern trail and begin ascending across open moorland valleys toward Kikelewa Camp. The route becomes more scenic with gentle rolling ridges, giant groundsels, and dramatic mountain backdrops.

Throughout the day, both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks become increasingly prominent, giving climbers a real sense of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic scale. The air grows thinner, so guides encourage a very slow “pole pole” pace while maintaining steady hydration.

Kikelewa Camp sits in a sheltered valley surrounded by giant senecios and beautiful mountain formations. The peaceful atmosphere here makes it one of the most picturesque camps on the Rongai Route.

— Accommodation: Camping (Kikelewa Camp)
DAY 4

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Turn Camp

Altitude: 3,600m to 4,330m | Distance: 6 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Today’s trail climbs more steeply into the alpine zone as vegetation begins to thin dramatically. The route traverses rocky ridges with sweeping views down over the northern wilderness and upward toward the towering spires of Mawenzi.

Mawenzi Turn Camp is located in a dramatic amphitheater beneath Mawenzi Peak and is one of the most visually spectacular camps on Kilimanjaro. The camp provides a superb acclimatization environment due to its altitude and exposed mountain setting.

After lunch, there is time for rest and often a short acclimatization hike around the surrounding ridges. The high camp atmosphere and breathtaking views create a strong sense that the summit is drawing nearer.

— Accommodation: Camping (Mawenzi Turn Camp)
DAY 5

Mawenzi Turn Camp to Kibo Hut

Altitude: 4,330m to 4,720m | Distance: 9 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

This is an important transition day as you leave the shelter of Mawenzi and cross the vast barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The landscape here is stark, dry, and moon-like, with almost no vegetation and endless volcanic gravel underfoot.

Though the hike is not steep, the altitude makes progress slower and more demanding. The summit cone of Kibo rises directly ahead, creating an awe-inspiring reminder of tomorrow’s challenge.

Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, lunch is served and the afternoon is reserved entirely for rest. Your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing, checking headlamps, warm layers, water supply, and mental readiness. After an early dinner, climbers retire to bed for a few precious hours of sleep before midnight wake-up.

— Accommodation: Kibo Hut
DAY 6

Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Altitude: 4,720m to 5,895m down to 3,720m | Distance: 21 km | Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

Just before midnight, begin the most demanding and inspiring stage of the expedition. Under the beam of headlamps and a brilliant canopy of stars, ascend slowly up steep scree slopes toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim.

This section requires patience, determination, and mental strength, but your guides will maintain a slow rhythm and provide constant encouragement. As dawn begins to break over the African horizon, the glaciers around the crater shimmer with golden light—a magical reward for your effort.

From Gilman’s Point, continue around the crater rim to the iconic summit sign at Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point on the African continent. Celebrate this extraordinary accomplishment with photographs and unforgettable panoramic views before beginning the long descent back to Kibo Hut and eventually Horombo Hut.

— Accommodation: Horombo Hut
DAY 7

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Altitude: 3,720m to 1,860m | Distance: 20 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

After breakfast, begin the final descent through moorland and then into the lush rainforest of the Marangu Route. The rich greenery, bird songs, and warmer air create a refreshing contrast after the stark summit zone.

This final day is often filled with reflection, pride, and storytelling as climbers absorb the reality of what they have achieved. Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, complete official sign-out procedures and receive your summit certificates. The Sereti Wilderness Safaris team will then transfer you back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebratory dinner.
