Morning Departure

Your safari adventure begins very early in the morning with pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi by the Sereti Wilderness Safaris professional safari driver-guide.

At approximately 5:00 AM from Arusha (or earlier from Moshi), depart in a private 4×4 safari vehicle toward the magnificent Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The scenic drive passes through the Great Rift Valley landscapes, Maasai villages, coffee farms, and highland forests as the sun rises over northern Tanzania.

After approximately 3 to 4 hours, arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater rim where breathtaking panoramic views across the vast caldera offer the perfect first photo stop. Following registration formalities, begin the descent down the steep crater road into one of the densest wildlife habitats in Africa.

Immediately upon reaching the crater floor, the game drive begins through open grasslands where large herds of zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, and buffaloes are commonly seen. Predators are abundant here as well, and it is not unusual to encounter lions resting in the grass, spotted hyenas patrolling the plains, or jackals searching for prey.

As your guide explores different habitats including Lerai Forest, Gorigor Swamp, and the lake shores, there are excellent chances to spot elephants, hippos, flamingos, and if luck is on your side, the highly protected black rhino.

Lunch Time

At approximately 12:30 PM, enjoy a picnic lunch at the famous crater floor picnic site near the hippo pool.

This lunch stop offers a unique safari atmosphere where guests dine surrounded by one of the most spectacular wildlife settings on the continent. Hippos can often be seen wallowing nearby while birds, monkeys, and antelope move through the surrounding area.

After lunch, there is time to stretch, relax, and prepare for the afternoon section of the safari.

Afternoon Game Drive & Return

Following lunch, continue your afternoon game drive across different sectors of the crater floor to maximize wildlife sightings.

Because Ngorongoro supports resident wildlife year-round, this second half of the safari often delivers additional encounters with lions, hyenas, elephant bulls, warthogs, serval cats, ostriches, and numerous bird species. The compactness of the crater means game viewing remains highly productive throughout the day.

Your guide will continue searching for the crater’s most prized sightings while sharing information about the volcanic history, Maasai coexistence, and ecological significance of this UNESCO-protected landscape.

At approximately 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM, begin the ascent back to the crater rim and start the drive toward Arusha or Moshi. Arrive at your hotel in the evening around 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM depending on your departure location.
