Overview

Tarangire

The picturesque safari region of Tarangire, 200 kilometers southeast of the Serengeti, is known for its enormous elephant herds and great baobab trees.

Compared to the nearby Serengeti and Ngorongoro, the landscapes here are very different. Therefore, the three areas frequently work well together, especially during an overland safari.

The dry season, from June to October, is generally thought to be when the area is at its best because the animals tend to gather around the few permanent water sources inside the reserve, most notably the Tarangire River itself.

There are about 20 camps and lodges that offer guest accommodations and a variety of safari activities, most notably walking safari and night vehicle safari.

Geography

With an area of 2850 square kilometers, Tarangire is a sizable national park. It is located in the center of a vast conservation area that covers about 20,000 square kilometers and stretches past Lake Manyara to Lake Natron and the Kenyan border.

The fact that the reserve itself has a number of dependable year-round permanent water sources makes it essential to this ecosystem. The Tarangire River itself, which rises at the base of the nearby rift escarpment, flows into the park, and then evaporates from its terminus at Lake Burungi on the reserve’s western edge, is the most significant of these.

The landscapes are primarily composed of gently rolling hills covered in trees, with the occasional hill or kopje interspersed.

Many magnificent baobab trees, some of which are estimated to be older than 2000 years, can be found in the park’s northern area. One noteworthy specimen is the well-known Poacher’s Baobab, whose hollow trunk is said to have offered hunters shelter up until the park was gazetted. Since a local leopard can occasionally be found inside, let your guide enter first.

Wildlife

The seasonal migration of around 250,000 large mammals, including giraffes, buffaloes, oryx, ostriches, and lions, is Tarangire’s most notable wildlife feature.

Animals migrate towards the Tarangire River during the dry season of June to November, where they assemble in large numbers. The potential for wildlife viewing is very high.

The animals are much harder to locate during the opposite green season, which lasts from December to May and causes them to disperse into the vast hinterland. Despite the fact that this inward and outward movement is typical across species, different animals typically move in different directions and at different times. Most wildebeest and zebras travel north, first to Lake Manyara and then to Lake Natron. Buffaloes, gazelles, elephants, kongonis, elands, and oryx are among the animals that disperse onto the east and southeasterly plains. Moving more southerly are other herds of wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, and elands.

Seasons

The dry season from June to October is generally regarded as the ideal time to visit Tarangire because that is when the animals migrate to the park’s permanent water sources from a vast hinterland.

The animals disperse and the grass grows tall during the opposite green season, which lasts from February to May, making it much more difficult to see wildlife. But the scenery is lovely, the light is clear, and there are not many tourists around.

The timing of the Jun and Nov/Jan transitional periods, which occur between the two main seasons, varies depending on the specific rainfall patterns each year.
