While it may not be possible to cover all the major national parks and reserves in Tanzania within five days, you can focus on a specific region to make the most of your time. Here’s a suggested itinerary for a 5-day Tanzania wildlife safari:
Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, Tanzania, you will be transferred to your accommodation. Take some time to rest and recover from your journey. If you're up for it, you can explore the town of Arusha, visit local markets, or simply relax at your lodge. This is a good opportunity to acclimate yourself to the surroundings and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Start your day early and embark on a scenic drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park, which takes approximately 2 hours. Once inside the park, immerse yourself in a full day of game drives. Tarangire is renowned for its large herds of elephants and iconic baobab trees. Keep an eye out for other wildlife such as lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and various bird species. In the evening, settle into your lodge or campsite near Tarangire.
Leave Tarangire behind and head to Lake Manyara National Park, a short 1-hour drive away. Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, flamingos, and diverse birdlife. Take your time exploring the park and enjoying its unique features. Afterward, continue your journey to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which takes approximately 2 hours. Enjoy the stunning views from the crater rim and relax for the evening at your accommodation.
Today, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a full-day game drive. Marvel at the incredible wildlife that inhabits this caldera, including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, and various antelope species. The Ngorongoro Crater offers a unique opportunity to see a vast array of wildlife in a concentrated area. Enjoy a picnic lunch within the crater and soak in the breathtaking scenery. In the late afternoon, ascend back to the crater rim and return to your accommodation.
On the final day of your safari, depart from Ngorongoro and make your way to the renowned Serengeti National Park. The drive takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Spend the entire day exploring the vast plains of the Serengeti, known for its iconic wildebeest migration. Witness the incredible sight of large herds of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles moving across the landscape. Keep an eye out for predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Overnight, stay at a lodge or campsite within or near the Serengeti.
